The Poor Brothers of St. Francis of Assisi

The power of the Holy Spirit never ceases to amaze when you heed His promptings.

In the Marian month of May, the writer visited the Brothers of Les Paurves de Saint-Francois, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec (the “Brothers”) at their home on May 19th, 2025. He was accompanied by twenty-five parents and children, members of HCFM, Montreal. He celebrated holy Mass in both English and French. The Brothers sang as beautiful as a choir of angels glorifying God with their chants and songs. The Montreal HCFM visitors played guitar and accompanied the Brothers in singing hymns. A large family styled meal was later shared by all.

Brother Rock, P.S.F mentioned that once a month on the third Sunday of each month, holy Mass is celebrated at Assumption Cathedral, Trois Rivieres and is followed by a shared meal that brings together young families. The Brothers sing and assist at this celebration of the Holy Mass with young families. Additionally, there is home pilgrimage of a special statue of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (the “Holy Family”) which is shared by a family for a period then passed on to another family. When the holy image is in a home, the family prays together by the Holy Family statue.

Consistent with the theme of the sanctification of the family, the Brothers are actively introducing others to a recent canonized family of saints: the Ulman family. The entire Ulman family, including seven children, of whom one was in the womb, were canonized in 2023. They have prepared a booklet about the Ulman family in French for families with an English translation to follow. Also, the Brothers are seeking to obtain the visit of the Reliquary of the Ulman family for veneration by families. The Brothers have extended a kind invitation to the writer to the third Sunday of the month family sessions.

Upon reflection, it would appear that the Holy Spirit was guiding HCFM to a potential collaboration with the Brothers. The mission of the Brothers and that of HCFM seem to be aligned. We joined the Brothers in praying to the Holy Spirit and entrusting to our Lady the renewal and revival of the Catholic faith in the world and especially in the diocese of Trois Rivieres through which many Canadian saints and blesseds have passed.
